Some readers will be surprised to find that the main emphasis of this booklet is NOT on receiving the Holy Eucharist, or Holy Communion; nor is it on the unity and the community among the people caused by the Blessed Sacrament, as important as these elements are to a complete understanding of the Eucharist. However, there is a reason for this and that is to bring before the reader the essential truths taught by the Catholic church about the Sacrifice, Transubstantiation and the Real Presence because it is only after we grasp these truths that we realize fully why we should receive the Eucharist and how it unites us to God and to one another. This booklet may therefore be seen as an antidote to an unduly horizontal understanding of the Mass that reduces the Eucharistic celebration to the level of a community meeting and overemphasizes the meal dimension.
