CATECHISM ON THE LAY APOSTOLATE 71 pp. Much of the confusion among the laity in regard to the purpose of the Church, stems from an uncertainty about why the Church exists and how necessary the Church is in the economy of human salvation. Even in Apostolic time, the laity was closely identified with the Apostles in extending the kintgdom of Christ among nations. By the end of the first century we have record of over one hundred dioceses along the shores of the Mediterranean. This phenomenal growth of the Church would have been impossible without the close collaboration of the devoted Christians among the laity. Given the conditions of our world and society in our day, the laity is to do no less than the early Christian in cooperating with Christ in sharing the riches which He came into the world to confer on the human family. No better way to prepare oneself than through Father Hardon's books and catechisms.
